Federation Volunteers Keep Beach Clean

With summer winding down, volunteers made time for one more trip to the beach. Fifteen South River Federation volunteers picked up trash that had collected on the shores of South River Farm Park.

This 170 acre county park is one of the only truly natural sites in our watershed.   The park is located in Edgewater along Limehouse Cove, Selby Bay, and the South River. Currently, South River Farm Park is the site of the county's park maintenance facilities and is only lightly used by the public.

South River Farm Park, with its beautiful living shoreline installed in 1995 by South River Federation founder, John Flood, was the main stop for our annual South River Days Celebration kayak in June, which launched from Mayo Beach Park, another county park. When our group of 50 kayakers landed on the beach, we noticed all the trash and knew we had to take action. A cleanup was organized and thanks to the hard work of our volunteers, 15 bags of trash, one tire, and a lawn chair were removed from the shoreline. 

This events wraps up our “Take Out the Trash: One Creek at a Time” Interlux Waterfront Challenge series of stream and beach cleanups.
