Varsity U
Gators 39 - Old Mill 12
A special day for the Gators as they got the opportunity to play at University of MD Byrd Stadium. The Gators jumped on top of the Patriots early, driving down the field behind the blocking of their offensive line, led by center Matt Wilson and Tight End Justin Sodeman, to take a 6-0 lead. The Patriots answered, returning the kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown. After a failed extra point, the game was tied 6-6. On the ensuing kickoff, Nick Vermillion took advantage of some great blocking and outran the Patriots to the end zone for a 73 yard kickoff return. Zach Miller kicked the ball through the uprights for the two point conversion to make it 14 – 6 Gators. The Gators never looked back as quarterback Christian Frymark repeatedly led the team down the field. Warren Dixon and Garrett Phillips each scored in the second half to put the game out of reach. Defensively, the Gators did not allow the Patriots to move the ball. Will Pyne, Garrett Phillips, Zach Miller and Justin Granzow prevented the Patriots from getting outside. Jack Graziano, Nick Boogades and Justice Hubbard defended several passes to keep the Patriots passing attack in check. Graziano had a big interception in the 3rd quarter that stopped a Patriots drive. Brandon Downs, Andrew Chapman, Trey Kiessling, Kevin Galvin, Anthony Rowe, Mason Moseley and Mason Drenner clogged up the middle to make it difficult for Old Mill to run the ball. The Gators welcomed back Brooks Watson, one of their team leaders, who has been out since suffering a leg injury during the preseason. Though Brooks did not play a lot, it was great to have him back out on the field with his team. Receiver Tommy McGee saw limited action due to a minor knee injury that will keep him out for a short period of time.
