SRYA Honors Breast Cancer Awareness And Donates To The MD Food Bank

Great things are happening with SRYA in the month of October!

South River Youth Athletics (SRYA) is donning the pink as October ushers in Breast Cancer Awareness month. Breast cancer will affect 1 in 8 women in their lifetime and is the leading cause of death in women ages 35 to 54. Although it's more prevalent in women, men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer. SRYA's softball, cheerleader and football programs are showing their support this month by wearing various pink apparel.

As a football mom, I am always so proud of the boys' willingness and exuberance in wearing their pink shoelaces, socks and wrist bands and applaud the organization in bringing world issues into the lives of our youth and helping them to understand the world is bigger than their family and friends.

In keeping with that same spirit of helping others, the SRYA families have collected over 200 items for the Maryland Food Bank. There are more than 137,000 children who are at risk for hunger in Maryland. Malnutrition can lead to severe developmental disabilities and the Maryland Food Bank is leading the movement to end hunger in Maryland.

October is a busy month for SRYA! The SRYA Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Wednesday, October 5th at the Golf Club at South River. There will be fantastic prizes given away as well as auction items such as Redskin tickets and Ravens tickets. This is SRYA's largest fundraiser. If you're interested in playing in the golf tournament, please contact Chris Johnson at treasurer@srya.org as soon as possible. Time is running out and you don't want to miss out on a great time!

Winter basketball registration is now open for ages 5-18. If you're interested in SRYA's basketball program, please register your child at www.srya.org as soon as possible. Evaluations are being held this month so time is of the essence.

The SRYA cheerleaders will be having a car wash in the KMart parking lot on October 9th. The girls will be selling Seahawk fleece scarves made by cheer parents. These scarves are really cute and half the proceeds go towards breast cancer research. Come on out and get your car cleaned up, grab a scarf and support the SRYA cheerleaders!

SRYA is heading out to support DC United as they spar with Chicago Fire on October 15th at 7:30pm at RFK Stadium. Tailgating will commence at 5:30pm and then everyone will enjoy the game from premium level seats in section 335. If you'd like to join in on the fun, then you can purchase tickets at www.srya.org/soccer/DC_United_game.php.

On the horizon, SRYA is proud to announce that they will again have a team for the Polar Bear Plunge on January 28, 2012. The Polar Bear Plunge benefits the Maryland Special Olympics. It's a great time for a great cause. More details coming soon so keep a look out!
