The space is small, so go with it!

I read my Patch emails everyday. One article I love to read is about the luxury homes on the market in our area. I have been lucky enough to have a fantastic neighbor/friend that is a real estate agent bring me in to consult with a small few of these homes. What designer would not love to work in a huge, open room that is begging to have a purpose made? Ah, luxury!

Q: For those of us who love color and texture while maintaining beautiful homes who do not boast tons of extra "decorative" space, what are we to do to make our modest rooms look grande?

A: Use what you have.

Your powder room is only so big and I have not yet seen the stretcher tool at hardware stores that will allow you to expand your room in one crank of the bar. So don't be afraid to use deep, bold colors on the nook of a bathroom molded into the space under the stairway. As a matter of fact, I recommend it.

Make what you have special and tailored to you and your family in the home now. The fact is, color is going to make the biggest impact and the myth that dark colors make room seem small is a mostly a myth. You have to have a plan and be creative with your color to do it right. Marketing research indicates that over 80% of visual information is related to color. In other words, color conveys information. The right color is indeed worth a thousand words.

If you decide to keep the walls a lighter shade, great. Pick your inspiration piece and use that to gather the items you need to tell a large story in one room/ floor of your home. This is the time to use bold accents, large pictures, and maybe play with the scale of an object in the space it is planned for. A designers secret to create interest on the same level, just used differently.
