Who is Watching Aggression in Schools?
Almost every child is seeing the aggressive behavior taking place in school, even when adults do not. How many will step up to the bully and how many will join in with them?

Bullying is taking place in schools and with all of the attention given to the subject we have seen many more willing to speak up and say that they have seen or been bullied. Unfortunately those who are responsible for our children inside the school walls do not see the activity as often as other children see things happening. The aggressors are very good at hiding it from those in a position to do something and some are not aware of this behavior even if they see it, passing it off as kids being kids.
However 85% of the time that bullying is taking place peers are present and do witness bullying behavior taking place on the playground, in the classroom or hallway or in the cafeteria. They may know or observe bullying taking place on social networking sites too.
Research has shown that when a peer is willing to step in and intervene, they are successful in more than 50% of the cases and some research says it may be as much as 83%. The problem is that only 11-13% of children report almost always trying to stop the bullying, while some 33% are willing to join in bullying someone that they do not like.

My conclusion to this is that we must build a culture much the same that we have in building a culture that says it is not OK to drink and drive, or that smoking is not as acceptable as it was in the past. Building a culture of peace is about changing our viewpoint on allowing bullying (abuse) to take place on a classmate, workmate or anyone in our circle of influence.
