Center for Applied Technology’s Amber Wallis Heads to National Competition
Nine local students will travel to Kansas City to compete in the SkillsUSA National Competition.

The Center for Applied Technology (CAT) South in Edgewater will send nine students to the SkillsUSA National Competition in Kansas City June 24-28. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry workers that educate students on workplace skills.
The competition allows students to compete as a team or individually in the specific trade they have been studying. CAT will have students competing in a variety of categories including business procedures and dental and medical assisting.
Patch caught up with Amber Wallis who will be a senior at South River in the fall, and will compete in the dental assisting competition.

Edgewater Patch: What will your role be in the competition?
Amber Wallis: When I get there we are going to be competing in all aspects of dental assisting. Some of the skills are taking impressions and doing custom trays for dentures. We also do crowns and are judged on identifying instruments and procedures.
Edgewater Patch: With the SkillsUSA competition approaching, what are you most looking forward to?
Wallis: I am looking forward to a new experience. I have never been to Kansas City, and I have also never been on a plane.

Edgewater Patch: How has being involved with SkillsUSA helped prepare you for your future?
Wallis: It has helped me a lot in knowing more in a skill than most people in my class or anyone coming against me.
Edgewater Patch: What do you want to do after high school?
Wallis: I want to go to college and be a dental hygienist or become an endodontist—they do root canals.
