Details on the Shady Side Independence Day Celebration
Live music, pie contest, parade, food and fun for the whole family.
What better way to celebrate July Fourth than by enjoying a patriotic, stirring band concert, with the beauty of the West River in the background, with no admission charge? You can by coming to the Captain Salem Avery Museum, 1418 E.W. Shady Side Road, where the celebration will take place from noon until 3 p.m. on Monday. The 40-piece famous Bay Winds Concert Band will perform at 1 p.m., sponsored by the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society.
The Bay Winds Band will be performing for the 21st time at this event. Director Michael Svec was honored in December by receiving the Annie Award from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County for his dedication to arts education.
The Fourth of July begins in Shady Side with the traditional 10 a.m. parade sponsored by the Shady Side Kiwanis.

The old fashioned baking contest will take place again. Contestants are invited to bring their entrees to the Museum any time after 9 a.m. with a noon deadline. Judges are the members of our delegations to the Maryland General Assembly and county council, including, Sen. John Astle, Speaker Michael Busch, Del. Herb McMillan and Ron George, and Councilman Jerry Walker. Ribbons will be awarded to the winners in categories including, cakes, pies, cookies, bars, and those decorated for the holiday.
Following the judging, portions of the baked items will be offered for sale.
The Bay Winds Concert Band will begin their program at 1 p.m., offering people in the area a rare opportunity to hear this very talented group. The concert is presented by the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society as a gift to the community. The Society invites everyone to bring a lawn chair or blanket, listen to the inspiring music, enjoy the beauty of the waterfront, and celebrate the birth of our country with friends and family.
The program will begin with Boy Scout Troop 853 raising the flag and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Local college student Leanna Brown will sing the Star Spangled Banner.
There will be activities for children, and a food stand operated by Boy Scout Troop 853 will be available serving hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks and soft drinks. Members of the military with ID will receive a coupon entitling them to receive a free sandwich and lemonade.
