Four Teens Injured, Two Critically, In Lothian Car Accident

Four teenagers were injured, two critically, after their vehicle hit a utility pole hard enough to split the pole in half near Lothian.

LOTHIAN, MD — Two teens were critically injured after the 2013 Honda Accord they were in veered off the road and crashed into a telephone pole then a tree at 5245 Sands Rd. in Lothian Friday night. Two other passengers were serious injured. The impact of the car hitting the pole sheared it off.

The accident occurred just after 9 p.m. Sept. 20. The teens were traveling southbound on Sands Road near Whittington Drive when the driver failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. Anne Arundel County firefighters responded to multiple calls for help reporting the accident and passengers trapped inside.

Firefighters discovered a 15-year-old male from Lothian and a 16-year-old male from West River trapped in the rear seat in critical condition. Their extrication took approximately 10 minutes, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department reported. They were transported by two Maryland State Police Medevac helicopters. One was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the second was transported to the trauma center at UM Prince George’s Hospital Center.

The 17-year-old female driver from Bowie and a 17-year-old male passenger from Churchton were both transported by paramedics to the trauma center at UM Prince George’s Hospital Center with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening.

The preliminary cause of the crash is believed to be excessive speed, according to the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
