Girls Basketball Squeaks Past Southern, Boys Fall
Friday night game leaves girls in contention for county playoffs.
Girls
Friday night's girls basketball game against Southern seemed like it should have been a walk for the Lady Seahawks. In a January matchup against the Bulldogs, the Seahawks won easily, 68-29.
Not so last night.
The Bulldogs led throughout the game. By the end of the third period, the Bulldogs were ahead 26-32. But by the beginning of the fourth period, the Seahawks found their footing. Just 50 seconds in, guard Briana Bolden charged for the layup and brought the score to 28-32. Ten seconds later a breakaway three-pointer by Bolden had the Seahawks up by one.

And so it went for the final eight minutes of the game. Ahead by one, behind by two, ahead by two.
With 2:27 left in the game, a one-on-one, followed by a technical foul allowed Southern's Amanda Bell an opportunity to tie the score. Three free shots. She made them all, bringing the score to 39-39.

Then Bolden got the ball and brought the score to 41-39. Seconds remained but the Bulldogs couldn't score.
The final score remained at 41-39.
It was "Senior Night," the last regular season home game for South River, and the barely eeked-out victory allowed them to remain in contention for county playoffs.
The win against Southern leaves the girls varsity team with 15 wins and one loss in county play.
If they can get past Meade on Tuesday (Feb. 15) and Arundel on Friday (Feb. 18), they'll clinch a slot in the county championships. The Lady Seahawks have already beat both teams this season, but as the Friday night squeaker against Southern demonstrates, the past is not necessarily prelude to the future.
Top scorers for the game were Briana Bolden with 16 points, Taylor Bresnehan with eight points and Dominique Haide with six points.
Boys
The South River boys trailed Southern throughout the game but, like the girls, kept it close. Top scorers in the game were guards Kyle Dunn with 17 points and Delaszo Smith with 16 points. The final score was 59-66, Southern.
