Green Drinks Comes to Edgewater This Month

Program will highlight Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and include a cruise on the Richard Lee.

About five years ago, a group of environmentally-minded individuals came together to meet once a month to find networking opportunities. They named their monthly gatherings "green drinks" and they set up their meetings at various locations around town. The tiny group has blossomed to more than 200 regulars who gather at 30 locations around town.

And this month, they're coming to Edgewater.

The group will be heading to the (SERC) to highlight the education programs and take a river tour aboard the 65-foot tour boat, the Richard Lee. The boat is covered, so the event will take place in clear skies or drizzle.

The program will be held starting at 5:30 p.m. on April 14. If the federal government is shut down, SERC will be closed. If that is the case, Elvia Thompson, Green Drinks founder, said that the event will still be held with the boat departing from an alternate location in south county.

Thompson said that food is being provided by Palate Pleasers and Herrington on the Bay caterers. Music will be provided by Shady Side's Maggie Sansone

SERC Director Tuck Hines will be on site to talk about the research, education programs and eco-initiatives at the center. Some of SERC's on-site green practices include a solar array, permeable pavement and its electric shuttle vehicle.

Green drink attendees will begin in the visitor center at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar and appetizers. At 6:30 p.m., the group will board the Richard Lee for the water portion of the evening. Tickets for the boat ride are $25 and include appetizers, a cash bar and live music.

Best of all, the event will be held a few days short of the full moon, which this month will be on April 17.
