Lothian Man Driving Street Sweeper Involved In Serious Crash

A 56-year-old Lothian man driving a street sweeper was hit by a 19-year-old driving a Kia Forte the wrong way on Md. 27.

LOTHIAN, MD — A 56-year-old Lothian man was involved in a multi-vehicle crash involving a street sweeper he was driving July 22 in Hampstead. The accident closed a section of Md. 27 for several hours.

A 2016 white Kia Forte driven by 19-year-old Benjamin Johnson of Manchester was southbound on Md. 27 when it veered into the northbound lane and struck a 2007 white street sweeper driven by Lothian resident Floyd Dilsaver, 56, at approximately 11 a.m., reported the Maryland State Police. The street sweeper then hit the guardrail and the Kia struck a 2010 blue Honda CRV driven by Finksburg resident Karen Leppo, 53, the police reported.

Dilsaver was transported by ambulance to Carroll Hospital Center, while the Maryland State Police medevac flew Johnson to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Leppo was evaluated at the scene. It is unknown why the Kia drove into oncoming traffic. Charges against any of the drivers are pending and the investigation is ongoing, the Maryland State Police reported.
