Second Edgewater Drowning Of The Summer Reported

A man tumbled off the pier at Rhode River in Edgewater and never surfaced. Emergency responders have issued a warning to swimmers.

EDGEWATER, MD -- The Anne Arundel Fire Department was dispatched to 1001 Carrs Wharf Rd. in Edgewater June 30 at 3:45 a.m. Firefighters received a 911 call from a witness who reported that a man had fallen off the end of a pier into the Rhode River and did not resurface.

The dive team was called out and approximately 90 minutes later, divers recovered the man. Paramedics declared him deceased on the scene.

This is not the first time emergency responders have been dispatched to the Edgewater area to rescue someone from the water. The Anne Arundel Fire Department was called to Warehouse Creek near Slama Road in Edgewater June 6 after a man estimated to be in his mid-20s jumped into the water from the pier and did not resurface. Witnesses tried to find him while waiting for emergency responders to arrive. While he was found, he also was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics after they could not revive him.

After the June 6 drowning, Lt. Erik Kornmeyer with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said the drowning accident should serve as a "reminder" to others.

"With over 520 miles of shoreline, we remind all of our citizens and visitors to make sure that you don't jump into water that you can't see the bottom of because you don't know how shallow or deep it is, and it can be very dangerous," he told WBAL-TV.

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health also has released water and sun safety tips. The department shared that bewteen 2011 to 2012, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department responded to nearly 40 drowning and near-drowning incidents.
