Senior Spotlight: South River’s Jack Peterson
South River graduate Jack Peterson, 17, will head to James Madison University in the fall.

About this series: Patch stopped by South River High School on May 28 to speak with a few graduating seniors about their post-high school plans.
When speaking with South River graduate Jack Peterson, it’s quite obvious how excited he is about attending James Madison University in the fall—he lights up when he talks about it.
“When I visited the campus I loved it right away,” Peterson said. “People just came up and talked to me right away and I knew I couldn’t wait to go back there. As soon as I visited I put my deposit in, and it was just amazing all around.”

The 17-year-old plans to major in accounting or finance and work in the renewable energy field. However, that wasn’t always the path he imagined himself taking.
“When I was younger I always wanted to go to a military academy, but had a change of heart my sophomore year,” Peterson said. “I didn’t want the military environment anymore, and I took AP Environmental science sophomore year and it kind of opened my eyes to that field.”

Peterson has participated in the STEM program at South River and said the rigorous 11 AP classes he took has helped prepare him for college life. He was also a member of Envirothon for three years, and won the county championship each year.
However, despite all the classes he has taken at South River, he credits one teacher in particular for his drive to help the environment.
“Mr. Echiverri he was one of the best I ever had,” Peterson said. “It just amazed me how, as a society, we waste so much food and energy, and I just want to do my part in society to reverse that trend.”
