Sign Up to Serve on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Volunteer Center invites individuals and families to help military families, people with disabilities, seniors, students and more.

On Monday, Jan. 16, schools and employees of county, state and federal government will have the day off to celebrate the life and achievements of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated in 1968. The third Monday in January was made into a federal holiday to honor King's legacy in 1983.

Dr. King once said,

"Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."

So this year, the Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County and the Banneker Douglass Museum invite county residents to the "Everyone Can Serve: MLK Day in Annapolis" day Jan. 16.

Families and individual volunteers will be able to come together and volunteer for several nonprofit organizations at one central location: the Banneker-Douglass Museum at 84 Franklin St. in Annapolis.

Organizers are asking to make the day a “Day On, Not a Day Off” by participating in projects including helping with activities serving military families, people with disabilities, seniors, making school and family program materials for the Banneker-Douglass Museum, creating a community mosaic on the meaning of community and volunteering and more.

The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. and run until 2:30 p.m. “Everyone Can Serve” is a perfect opportunity for families to give back to their community.

To register, visit the Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County or email the Volunteer Center or call 410-897-9207.
