South County Senior Center October Activities

Live music, a Halloween party, a bowling party and free health screening keep seniors busy this month.

The on Stepneys Lane in Edgewater has announced programs for the month of October. The center is open to Anne Arunde County residents, 55 and older, who join. It is one of seven senior centers operating in the county. All of the centers are managed by the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging. 

  • Oct 7: Book Sale. Stock up for your winter reading at the gigantic book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Oct. 11: Talk: "Arthritis in Seniors: Causes and Treatments.”Dr. Jonathan R. Holtzman of Annapolis Chiropractic Associates will speak at 12:30 p.m. There will be an opportunity for questions after the presentation.
  • Oct. 12: Informational Session on Medicare Insurance Open Enrollment. Join the staff from the county Department of Aging and Disabilities Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program for a presentation, “Medicare Open Enrollment Dates Have Changed.” Open enrollment is now Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. Learn what you need to consider during this year’s open enrollment period at this talk at 10 a.m.
  • Oct. 12: Presentation on "Canine Solutions for Seniors." In this presentation and demonstration by Ilene Caroom and her dog, Caroom answers the question, what can a dog do that will help you in your daily life? Find out at 1 p.m. Whether it’s picking up something you dropped, helping you pull off your shoes, alerting you to an alarm you didn’t hear, or simply putting their toys in a basket, dogs love having a job to do. 
  • Oct. 17: Free Glaucoma Screening. A brief presentation by the Maryland Society for Sight is followed by glaucoma screenings. The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon. Sign up at the front desk. 
  • Oct. 19: Bowling for free at Annapolis Bowl. Members of the South County Senior Activity Center can attend a free senior fund day from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Annapolis Bowl on Generals Highway in Annapolis. The event includes two free games of bowling, shoe rental, and refreshments. Sign up at the center. Registration is required and limited van service will be available.
  • Oct. 26: "Johnny Cash" as portrayed by Jed Duval. The performer is returning after he presented an Elvis show at the center in June. Showtime is 1 p.m.
  • Oct. 31: A Halloween Costume Party will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Participants can come dressed in a costume and enjoy an afternoon of Halloween fun. The music will be by DC John Armetta and refreshments will be served.
  • Throughout October: The Hearts of Gold “fun"d-raiser with the proceeds will be equally divided between the American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer’s Association. Bidding on silent auction items ends at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31.Next year two different charities will be selected from center member nominations from the center members. To date, a little over $4,000 has been raised.
