South River Hen-Raising STEM Project Gets Hearing in Annapolis

Last year, South River High School STEM students worked with business and government leaders to come up with solutions to real world problems.

magnet students are taught more than just Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) at their Edgewater school.

The administrators of the STEM program also want them to learn "real world" skills. So last year, they paired students with business mentors who helped them .

In June, seven of the problems were showcased at a STEM event attended by Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent Kevin Maxwell, as well as other administrators and business people from the community.

Working together with the students, the mentors guided their charges to come up with a solution, get feedback from other business and government officials, revise their solutions and then make a business-plan type presentation, complete with written reports, prototypes and a PowerPoint presentation.

One of the presentations about a portable hen coop has since made it to the city of Annapolis, according to a story in The Capital, as the council considers whether to allow residents to keep chickens in the city. .
