For the purposes of pricing, we figured a 12lb turkey, 2lbs of green beans, one bag of potatoes, two cans of cranberry sauce, one can of pumpkin and one box of pie dough. Safeway was the lowest ($28.12); then Food Lion ($29.52) and then Giant Food ($36.79).

Without using the store's club card, Safeway's bill would have been much higher. Be sure to sign up for the bonus or MVP or club card wherever you regularly shop.

In addition, both Food Lion and Safeway required a minimum $35 purchase in groceries to get the Butterball brand turkey at .99 a pound.

In addition, a couple of the stores had great deals on individual items. Giant had Mrs. Smith’s Pies, in all flavors (apple, coconut, cherry, pumpkin, blueberry), regularly $6.29 each, on special for 2 for $5. In addition, their russet potatoes were buy one bag, get one bag free.

Safeway had frozen turkeys (their own brand) for .59¢ a pound with a minimum $35 purchase in groceries.

Food Lion was  offering the Jenny-O brand of frozen turkey for 59¢ a pound, and frozen vegetables from Green Giant brand were buy one get one free.

Those who would like a completely fresh turkey can order one from the Dutch Market in Annapolis for around $3 a pound. They will be available the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
