Two Sinkholes on Patuxent River Road to be Repaired in 15 to 30 Days

Department of Public Works quickly restoring north-south alternate to 424 through Davidsonville.

According to Matt Diehl, spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works, the two sinkholes on Patuxent River Road should be repaired by mid-October.

One of the sinkholes, about a mile south of Central Avenue on Patuxent River Road ate two cars in the past week. The first was last was a victim of the sinkhole, which measures 25 feet wide, 15 feet across and 15 feet deep. Then on Monday, a man was rescued when his blue Jeep Liberty

The man either drove around the road closed barrier, or someone moved the barriers off the road before he got there.

The other sinkhole is also on Patuxent River Road between Gov. Bridge Road and Double Gate Road in Davidsonville.

Both roads have been barricaded since Tropical Storm Lee left us at the end of last week.

According to Diehl, the sinkhole south of 214 will require a new pipe and has been assigned to the bureau of engineering planning, design and construction. The 72" pipe north of 214 was deemed structurally sound and will be re-built overtop. 

"Both sections [of Patuxent River Road] are anticipated to be reopened within 15 to 30 days," Diehl said.

UPDATE - On Thursday, Matt Diehl sent the following email to Edgewater Patch:

Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works (DPW) Bureau of Highway (BOH) officials are expected to reopen several roads currently closed due to roadway wash outs resulting from flash floods associated with Tropical Storm Lee within the next seven days. Making repairs and opening closed roads a priority, the BOH is expected to reopen the majority of the current 13 closures within the next month. Chesterfield Road at Hawkins Road and Old Herald Harbor Road at H Diggs Lane in Crownsville, Harwood Road at Waysons Road in Harwood and Patuxent River Road in Davidsonville at Queen Anne Bridge Road will remain closed beyond 30 days due to the extensive damage and extremely complex nature of repairs.

Repairs also continue on the twelve storm damaged roads reduced to one lane. Two roads are expected to be repaired and reopened this week. Officials anticipate that the majority of these partially closed road segments will be reopened within the next 30 days. Extended lane reductions in Severn will continue beyond 30 days on Sandy Hill Road from Quarterfield Road to the cul-de-sac and Old Oak Road from Bannister Road to Teppers Road. Governor Bridge Road in Davidsonville between Patuxent River Road and the Bridge, Saint Stephens Church Road in Crownsville between Chesterfield Road and Edwin Lane, Patuxent River Road in Crofton between MD 450 and Arrowhead Farms, and Evergreen Road in Odenton between RT 3 and Jackson Road will also continue with a needed lane reduction beyond 30 days .
