More Skeletal Remains Found In Shady Side: Update

More skeletal remains found Sunday in Shady Side, where they washed ashore, are likely those of a woman found police say.

SHADY SIDE, MD — More skeletal human remains found in Shady Side on Sunday are linked linked to earlier remains recovered a woman in her 20s to age 30, authorities said Monday. The initial remains were found Oct. 18 in the area of Holly Drive and Chesapeake Drive, according to Anne Arundel County Police, who say the skeletal remains found on the shoreline had washed ashore.

Shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, officers were sent to the 5300 block of Chesapeake Avenue in Shady Side for the discovery of human remains. Police located skeletal remains on the shoreline that had washed ashore. Detectives and staff from the medical examiner's office responded and collected the remains. So far, the sex, age, race, and manner of death are unknown and pending autopsy. But investigators believe the remains had been in the water for a long period of time and could be related to the remains discovered on Oct. 18 in the same area.

Authorities said previously that they believe the remains are that of someone who went missing within the past year.

When police were initially called for a report of remains found along the shore, a wider search by patrol officers, detectives and members of the Department of Natural Resources recovered additional human skeletal remains. A preliminary assessment by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner shows the remains are those of a Caucasian or Asian woman in her mid-20s to 30 years old, who was about 5-feet 3-inches tall.

Examination of the remains continues in an effort to obtain as many physical descriptors as possible to help identify the woman, as well as a cause and manner of death. The Anne Arundel County Police Department says it is working with neighboring jurisdictions in an attempt to identify the deceased.
