Flanders answered a separate set of questions from Ellen, in which she confirmed that she was meant to be a teacher; she lived with her parents because she couldn’t afford to live alone; and she purchased more than $1,000 worth of school supplies for her students with her own money.
According to Ellen’s correspondent, Flanders has also on occasion paid for food for her students, who attend a Title I school, meaning its population tends to be from low-income families.
Flanders received $10,000 from Shutterfly, and Ellen dubbed her a “hero teacher” in the segment, which aired at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 16.
