Century Girls Lacrosse Capture Sixth State Title

South Carroll boys come up short in title run.

The Century girls completed a fantastic sports school year by winning the 3A-2A girls lacrosse title Tuesday over Queen Anne’s, 12-9 at UMBC.

South Carroll boys played after Century for the 2A-1A title and came up short to Fallston, 14-7. The Cavaliers hung in against Fallston before the fourth quarter, when Fallston pulled away.

The Knights won the volleyball title in the fall, played for the basketball championship in the winter and won their sixth title lacrosse title. It is the ninth time in 10 years that the Knights played for the state title.

"They were very hurt by losing (last year). They came back and brought with them this year, that no matter what, they were going to do it,’’ said Century Coach Becky Groves. Groves also guided the volleyball team in the fall.

Haley Bordner paced the victors with five goals and one assist. Seniors Alice Mercer and Angela Flister also scored multiple goals. Mercer found the net three times and Flister twice.

At one point in the first half, Century was down 5-3, but came back in the final five minutes to take an 8-5 lead. Both teams scored four goals each in the second half as each team dealt with yellow cards.

Queen Anne’s controlled the draws 13-10, but Century out shot the Eastern Shore team, 28-19. Junior Allison Remenapp made three saves in the goal for Century, but was injured after the game celebrating.

Century had four freshmen on defense and only three senior on the team. Besides Mercer and Flister, Brooke Dolan suited up for the last time as a Knight.

Century ended the season with an 18-1 record, while Queen Anne’s was 16-2. The South Carroll boys were 10-9 and Fallston was 15-5. It was South Carroll’s first trip to the state finals.
