Century Opens Softball Season With a Win

The Knights pound out 13 hits in Wednesday's game against Thomas Johnson.

with stood a seventh inning comeback by visiting Thomas Johnson to win their softball opener, 9-8.

The Knights pounded out 13 hits to capture the victory. Senior Alyssa Dixon led the attack with three hits and three runs batted in. Erin Stephey, Julia Szckely, Megan Beane and Amanda Pruitt had two hits each. Alaina Frierman and Brooke Snyder had a hit each.

Freirman had a double while teammates Stephey and Snyder each had a triple.

"We haven’t hit the ball well, I mean we didn’t hit the ball well in our scrimmages. I was just glad to see we hit the ball with some authority, so that was good," said Century coach Jay Seaborg.

Dixon went five innings for the win. She fanned five Patriots while walking three. Shannon Stevens pitched the final two innings for Knights and walked one.

Thomas Johnson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in second inning, but the home team came back in the bottom of the third to tie the score. After four innings, Century led 4 to 3.

Thomas Johnson bounced back to take a 5 to 4 lead after the top of the fifth. The Knights sent all nine batters to the plate in the fifth to take a 9-5 lead. They scored the five runs with two outs.

The Patriots battled back to score three runs in the top of the seventh before Century got the third out for the win.

"We got a really young team. I mean I lost six starters from last year’s team, so we are going to have lots of games like this, where we are mentally its going to take us a couple games to get in sync."

"We got kids moving up from JV, we got freshmen starting on varsity. The first couple games of the season are going to be a learning experience," Seaborg said.
