High School Sports: Boys Cross Country Opens Season

The boys lace on their shoes and head for the hills.

The Century, Liberty and South Carroll boys cross country teams are getting ready to turn practice into meets.

The Knights open the 2011 season with a new coach, Justin Metzger. Century was third in the county meet last year.

Senior Patrick Anske will lead the Knights and get support from sophomores John Mead and John Turskey.

Century opens the season Saturday at 9 am at Mount St. Mary’s in the Peter Geraghty Invite.

Dan Jones returns for the 22nd year as coach of the Lions and will be joined by first year coach Pete Lester. Lester graduated from Liberty in 2004.

Liberty was fourth in the county last fall.

Two seniors Greg Rinehart and Jake Spivey return for the Lions. Rinehart will miss the beginning of the season due to his grades.

Jones has two first-year runners that should score for the Lions. They are junior Tyler Pollard and freshmen Chad Sussman.

Liberty opens the season on Sept. 10 in the Brunswick Invite.

The Cavaliers will once again be led by coaches Rob Pennington and Dan Reedy. Pennington is starting his 21st year and Reedy his third.

South Carroll will be paced by two seniors, Nick Chaconas and Ryan Smith. Smith was 22nd in the county meet last year.

The Cavaliers see action Tuesday in a meet at Westminster along with Century, Francis Scott Key and the home team.
