High School Sports: Cavaliers Remain Undefeated in County Boys Soccer

The South Carroll boys soccer squad collected their third victory of the week with a 4-0 win over Liberty.

On Monday, they downed Westminster 1-0 and dispatched Century on Tuesday, 6-2. The Cavaliers are 5-0 in the county and 8-1 overall. The Lions fall into a tie for second in the county with Century at 3-1. Liberty is 5-2 overall.

"They should be loaded with confidence, especially after this result," said South Carroll coach Tim Novotny. "They know they still have to work hard. This is our fourth county game in a row and we have a few more to go. They know it takes hard work."

South Carroll hung three goals on the home Lions in the first half Friday night. Junior Phil Breno got South Carroll on the board with 37:34 left in the first half off a throw-in.

Novotny when asked how big the first goal was said, "It was huge, against Liberty when you get a chance to strike, you got to strike. They are so good. I would say they dominated the first half."

Ethan McBryde converted a penalty kick 10 minutes later to increase the lead to 2-0. Paul Henderson closed out the first half scoring at the 11:46 mark.

"He’s doing an awesome job. One thing I always say about Ethan, He doesn’t care if he comes away with a goals. He would actually liked to have an assist," said Novotny.

In the second half with 19:23 remaining in the game, Isaac Lambert scored off a throw-in for the final margin of victory.

"We both had our opportunies tonight. The difference is they finished," said Liberty coach Todd Muschik. "The second half they had two shots on our goal and we had the majority of play. It might be a little too late, but we picked it up in the second half. Again the bottom line is they finished their chances and we just couldn’t tonight."

The Lions had many chances including a shot of the post with about 25 minutes left in the game.

South Carroll sophomore goalie Brandon Quinn recorded nine saves in the shutout.

"The season's not lost. We will see them again," said Muschik. "It’s heartbreaking that we lose on our own field, but they are a good team. They put away their chances and we just didn’t."
