High School Sports: Liberty Edges Westminster in Girls' Soccer

Lions even county record at 1-1 with Thursday's win.

Liberty earned their first girls soccer county win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Westminster.

Sammy Bost scored the two goals to lead the Lions to the win. Liberty evens their county record 1-1 and 2-3 overall. The Owls fall to 1-1 in the county and 1-4 overall.

Bost scored what turned out to be the winning goal with 20:57 left the game. She took a pass and worked past Westminster defenders to kick in the ball.

"At halftime, I wanted boost their confidence," said Liberty coach Callie Gillen. "They knew we only had a second half to play so we had to get the goal quick or we were going to get behind."

The Owls scored first in the game at the 28:10 mark as Mackensie Murray found the net. The Lions kept the pressure on but couldn’t score including a penalty kick that Westminster goalie Alayna Morris stopped.

Then with 5:06 left in the first half, Liberty got a corner kick and Bost scored on an assist from Jenny Litz.

"We typically get a million chances to connect on a cross and we take a second to think about it and end up missing," said Gillen.

Liberty outshot the visitors 13-2 in the game with the Lions goalie Taylor Stillings stopping 12 shots, while Morris stopped 11 shots.

Senior defender Cierra Rites made a big save in the second half as Westminster got the ball past Stillings. Rites kicked the ball out of the goal mouth to keep the score knotted at 1 before Bost scored.

"I thought the whole game they out played us," said Westminster coach Bird Brown. "We are tired, we have three games this week and have injuries. No excuses, because they really took it to us. They wanted it a little bit more than we did tonight," he said.

"Our girls fought hard with everything they had, so I am proud of our girls. They took advantage of the breaks when they had a chance to," said Brown.

Both teams return to action Monday as Liberty travels to Uniontown to take on Francis Scott Key at 4 p.m. and the Owls host South Carroll at 6:30 p.m.
