High School Sports: Westminster Tops Century in Girls Lacrosse

The Owls came out ahead of the Knights Thursday night 17-14.

In a game of two half’s, Westminster won the important second half for a 17-14 win over Century in girls lacrosse.

"I think maybe we won one draw in the second half. You can’t score if you don’t have the ball. Westminster did a good job, just coming out on fire and getting the draw and then coming down and scoring," said Century coach Becky Trumbo.

The difference in the game Thursday afternoon was halftime. The Knights won the first half 11-7 and had a six goal margin 10-4 when Westminster started to get back in the game.

"We just told them we know how they can play," said Owl coach Jackie Stevens. "We were down by six. We told them if they wanted to be that second half team they were. We know their skills and we know what they have and they just came out on top. We are really proud of them."

Westminster scored the first three goals of the second half to draw the game to within one goal, 11-10. The two teams traded goals with the game tied twice, before Century scored their last goal of the game at 13:13. Taking a one goal lead.

"If they had the ball, they scored. If we had the ball, we scored. It was more of an offensive game tonight. They brought it in the second half and we didn’t. They played with more heart on the draw. The draw is where you win games," said Trumbo.

The Owls came back to score the last four goals of the game, three off the stick of sophomore Carolyn Jamison. The Owls won the draw after the last goal and ran out the clock. Westminster outscored the home team 10-3 in the second half.

"The Owls came out kind of slow the first half and were making some mistakes, but the second half they just played smart and were passing well. Now we know what we can do and hopefully we can keep on doing it," said Stevens.

Westminster’s Bethany Baer was the top scorer in the contest with six goals. Jamison and Alyssa Semones had five goals in the game and Meghan Macera had one.

Haley Bordner topped the Knights with four goals, Alice Mercer had three, Angela Flister, Jill Remenapp and Alexa McGovern had two and Kailey Wolfe added one.

The Owls are alone on top the county standings at 3-0 and 6-0 overall. Century drops one game behind the Owls at 2-1 and are 5-1 overall.
