High School Track and Field: Lions and Knights Split Meet

Liberty ran away from the field in the girls side of a tri-meet with Century and Westminster, while the Knights took the boys meet.

The Lions compiled 99 points in the girls meet followed by Century with 61.50 and Westminster with 25.50. In the boys meet, Century had 73 , Westminster 64 and Liberty 49.

In winning the girls meet, the Lions took first in 13 of the 18 events, including three of the four relays.

Liberty was led by sophomore Ashley Ross and junior Taylor Stillings. Ross won the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes. Stillings won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles along with running legs on the winning 800 and 1600 meter relays.

Century’s Maura Linde came home first in the 800 and 1600 meter runs.

On the boys side, Century was led by Josh Titus with three victories while teammate Nick Pezza grabbed two firsts. Titus won the 100, 200 and 400 meter runs. Pezza won the 800 and 1600 meter runs.

Matt Thompson won Liberty’s lone individual win in the boys meet. He out distanced the field by four feet in the triple jump. The Lions won the 400 and 800 meter relays.

"Since last week was only partially done, it really felt like tonight was the first time we really competed against Century today," said Liberty coach Bobby Ward. "Both teams kept a few kids out, Century had some injuries, and we saved some of our distance kids for our invite Saturday, but the kids were ready to go."

"To finally get the whole team competing had them very excited. I think the girls know we are only just getting started, and will take every little victory along the way, but know that it is May we are aiming for, and the team is really starting to come together. We are real excited, and won't start comparing ourselves to other teams till we get to May and everybody on each team is ready to take a shot at a championship."
