Liberty, Century Among Newsweek's Best High Schools

and  have made the cut, ranking among the 500 schools on Newsweek's list of America's Best High Schools. 

Liberty ranked 303, or 11th in the state, while Century ranked 469, or 19th in the state. 

In order to be considered for the Newsweek list, each school had to complete a survey on data from its 2009-2010 academic year. This year, more than 1,100 schools replied and were assessed for the list of 500 top schools. 

The panel of experts enlisted to help included Wendy Kopp of Teach For America, Tom Vander Ark of Open Education Solutions (formerly the executive director for education at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), and Linda Darling-Hammond, Stanford professor of education and founder of the School Redesign Network. 

Each school’s score includes six components focused on finding the schools that best prepare students for college: graduation rate (25 percent), college matriculation rate (25 percent), AP tests taken per graduate (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10 percent) and AP courses offered (5 percent).

Here's how the schools measured up: 

• Student-teacher ratio: 18.4. 
• Graduation rate: 99 percent. 
• Average AP/IB/AICE scores: 1.5.
• College bound: 91 percent. 
• Average SAT score: 1582. 

• Student-teacher ratio: 20. 
• Graduation rate: 98 percent.
• Average AP/IB/AICE scores: 1.6. 
• College bound: 86 percent. 
• Average SAT score: 1571.
