Liberty Girls Lead After First Day of State Track Championships

The Lions have a seven point lead over North Hagerstown.

The Liberty girls made a good showing on the first day of state Class 2A track meet to lead after five events.

The Lions have a seven point lead over North Hagerstown, 24 to 17. The Liberty girls are hoping to add a trophy to the county and regional titles they won this spring.

The Lions won the first event of the track Thursday at Morgan State. The foursome of Brittany Arndt, Taylor Tarnalicki, Casey Sullivan, and Samantha McElroy captured the 4X800 relay with a time of 9:44.88.

Ashlyn Anderson captured the other first place for Liberty with a toss of 97-03 in the discus.

The other points were a fifth place finish by Taylor Stillings, Brittany Arndt, Bre Manger and Ashley Ross in the 4X200 relay.

Ross also advanced the final in the 200 meter dash which will be run Saturday with the other finals.

Century is fifth in the standings with 14 points. They are running without Maura Linde, who is out with an injury.

The Knights on the legs of Allie Dearie, Lydia Dearie, Rachel Larkin and Morgan Fagnant took second in the 4X800 relay.

Kelsey Capparelli was fifth in the discus and Alexis Bush was seventh in the triple jump.

The boys completed seven events and Century is 14th with nine points, South Carroll is tied for 18th with six points and Liberty is tied for 24th with three points.

The Knights received their points from Matt Candland with a fourth in the pole vault,

Nick Pezza was seventh in the 3200 meter run and the 4X800 relay team was seventh.

Liberty earned their points with a sixth place finish in the 4X800 meter relay.

South Carroll had Ryan Patrick take fifth in the shot put and teammate Ethan McBryde was seventh in the long jump.

Century had good results in the 100, 200 and 110 meter high hurdles preliminaries. Josh Titus advanced to the finals in the 100 and 200 while Julian Woods will start in the finals of the hurdles.

The meet resumes Saturday at 11 a.m. at Morgan State.
