Neither Rain, Nor Wind, Nor Hurricane Will Stop These Local Teens From Giving Back

Local teens gave back at Carrolltowne Elementary.

While most people were hunkering down for Hurricane Irene, the Freedom District Lions worked with the Liberty Leos and area youth providing school supplies for deserving elementary school children in Eldersburg.

Led by Sophomore and LEO Emily Livesay and utilizing funds from the Youth Outreach Committee, six area youth shopped, assembled and delivered a full year of school supplies for 21 students at from kindergarten through fifth grade.

When asked why she led the project, Livesay said, "I worked on this project last year and we helped a lot of elementary school students have a better school year, so when our president Kelsey Hof asked for a leader, I volunteered."

The Lions wait until the last minute to make sure they help as many students as possible. Orientation was Monday, Aug. 29, so Saturday was the last day they could complete the project and still get the backpacks to the kids in time for school.

"This is a great project for everyone involved and you should see the look on peoples' face when you buy baskets full of school supplies," said Livesay.

When asked why they went out during the beginning of the hurricane, Livesay replied, “these kids are counting on us. Nobody wants to go to school without school supplies. This way they get a good start on the first day."
