Emily Schindler Memorial Lecture Will Focus on Healing After Trauma

Chesapeake Life Center invites the community to the 11th annual Emily Schindler Memorial Lecture titled “The Trauma Whisperers: What Works in Contemporary Trauma Treatment” presented by Daniel L. Buccino, LCSW-C, BCD, from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at Anne Arundel Community College, 7000 Arundel Mills Circle, Hanover, MD.

This highly acclaimed and clinically relevant workshop is meant to demystify some of the competing discourses about trauma treatment and support therapists in all practice settings to be better equipped to respond.

Buccino will examine the differences in how people respond when exposed to trauma in war, urban violence and incarceration, domestic violence, physical and sexual child abuse and neglect, terrorism and natural disasters. In reviewing issues of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), medication management, psychic numbing and hypervigilance, vicarious traumatization, competing models of therapy, and resilience, Buccino will share with participants the latest gentle, but steadfast and effective strategies for promoting recovery in those suffering from psychological wounds.

The Emily Schindler Memorial Lecture was created in 2005 through a gift to the Schindler family from the Saint Agnes Cancer Center. Emily Schindler was an 18-year-old freshman at Frostburg State University and a member of the SPY swim team in Severna Park, MD, when she was tragically killed in a car accident in 2004.

About the presenter:

Daniel L. Buccino is a clinical supervisor and student coordinator in the Community Psychiatry Program at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, founder and director of the Baltimore Psychotherapy Institute, and an associate and adviser for the International Center for Clinical Excellence.

Buccino is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, as well as an Associate Professor at the Smith College School for Social Work and the University of Maryland School of Social Work.

Buccino has published, lectured and consulted widely on issues of psychotherapy outcomes, ethics and civility in health care. He is well-known as “The Trauma Whisperer” for his widely acclaimed workshops.
