15 Year Anniversary of the Marine Corps League, SSgt Karl G. Taylor, Sr. (Howard County) Detachment 1084

On June 23, 2001, the Howard County Marine Corps League was born when 21 motivated Marines were awarded a charter by the Department of Maryland Commandant, thus making the Detachment 1084 official. Our mission is to join together in camaraderie and fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the United States Marine Corps.

On June 23, 2016, our detachment, renamed the SSgt Karl G. Taylor, Sr. (Howard County) Detachment 1084, will celebrate its 15 year anniversary. Our namesake, SSgt Karl G. Taylor, Sr. was a Marine from Laurel, Howard County, Maryland who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor (our nation's highest military honor) for heroism in the Vietnam War.

Over the last 15 years, we have organized and participated in numerous activities to support our mission and the community.
• Sponsored a Patriotism Essay.
• Awarded several thousand dollars in scholarships to outstanding Howard County graduates.
• Provided emotional support to wounded Marines in the hospital.
• Picked up hundreds of bags of trash as part of the Adopt-a-Highway Program.
• Volunteered in the Toys-for-Tots Program.
• Attended Marine Corps birthday ball celebrations.
• Provided a color guard to march in various local parades.
• Organized golf tournaments.
• Participated at various local town festivals.
• Donated hundreds of dollars and material goods to the Marines Helping Marines Program.
• Provided free lunches to veterans on Veterans Day.

Our detachment meets on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 1930 (7:30pm) at the Yingling-Ridgely Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Auxiliary Post 7472 located at 4225 VFW Lane, Ellicott City, Maryland 21043. We are always looking for new members. For more information, see
