2 Ellicott City Residents Killed in Plane Crash: Police

The victims of a plane crash in Queen Anne's County on Tuesday have been identified, police said.

QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY, MD – Maryland State Police identified the man and woman killed in Tuesday's plane crash near the Bay Bridge as a pair of Ellicott City residents.

Richard Hess, 63, of Ellicott City, and Janet Metz, 56, of Ellicott City, were both pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash, which occurred near Stevensville, according to police.

Hess was piloting the plane, and Metz, who was his friend, was a passenger, police reported.

Federal officials are leading the investigation into the crash and will determine a cause, according to police.

Troopers and firefighters responded to the crash at 12:44 p.m. Tuesday in the area of MD 8 and eastbound US 50 in Queen Anne's County, according to Maryland State Police.

Witnesses told police the plane, a Van's Aircraft RV 12, exploded after crashing to the ground in an open field near the Ellendale Manor community in Stevensville. Authorities said the plane was used by Chesapeake Sport Pilot, a flight school on Kent Island.
