$40K In Mosque Money Spent On Personal Items By Its Former President: Court
The former president of a Howard County mosque has pleaded guilty to a theft scheme where he spent more than $40K on personal items.
HOWARD COUNTY, MD — A 52-year-old Howard County man pleaded guilty this week to a theft scheme of up to $100,000 that occurred while he served as president of the Dar Al-Taqwa mosque in Ellicott City.
As president, Adnan Faiyaz Khan had access to checks and debit cards from the mosque's bank accounts. According to the Howard County State's Attorney Office, between Jan. 5, 2017 and Aug. 9, 2019, Khan used $40,000 in mosque funds to make purchases for himself and his family, including light fixtures for his home, a new vehicle for his wife, made property tax payments for his business in Prince George’s County and spent money on personal activities and food during a family vacation.
According to court documents, Khan did not have permission from any of the Dar Al-Taqwa mosque board members or any members of the mosque to use its money for his personal expenses. Khan was sentenced to five years suspended with two years of unsupervised probation.
