8 Howard County Public School System Buildings Named 2024 Maryland Green Schools

Eight Howard County Public School System buildings have been named 2024 Maryland Green Schools for their efforts in green initiatives.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Eight Howard County Public School System schools were recently announced as 2024 Maryland Green Schools by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education. The award recognizes these schools' commitment to developing stewards of the earth among students and reducing the school’s environmental impact.

  • Hammond High School: recertified as a Maryland Green School.
  • St. John’s Lane and Talbott Springs elementary schools: achieved Sustainable Schools level status, having successfully completed four or more Green School applications.
  • Glenwood and Lime Kiln middle schools, and Reservoir High School: achieved Sustainable Bronze level status, having participated in the Maryland Green Schools program for 18 years.

“We are proud of how hard our schools work to support environmental education, and help students learn to become stewards of their environment,” said HCPSS coordinator of elementary Science Amy Reese, who, along with several HCPSS colleagues, helps schools apply to become Green Schools. “Our students, teachers, administrators and community have chosen to participate in the Maryland Green School program because they care about the Earth and want to generate change, encouraging all to form good life habits, such as recycling, composting, planting trees/plants and caring for our waterways."

HCPSS currently has 45 schools participating in the Maryland Green Schools program. The 2024 Maryland Green Schools will be celebrated at the Annual Maryland Green Schools Youth Summit on May 30.
