AT&T and Maryland Highway Safety Team Up For Distracted Driving Safety Event At Howard High School

Event in Ellicott City Educates Marylanders on the Dangers of Smartphone Distracted Driving

Students at Howard High School are learning about the dangers of distracted driving today! AT&T is teaming up with the Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO) and the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration, to educate students and faculty on the dangers of texting while driving through AT&T’s “It Can Wait” campaign. There will be various driver safety simulators and activities aimed at helping improve young driver safety - more than 200,000 crashes occur annually because of smartphone use while driving.

“Using a smartphone while driving can be deadly – for drivers, their passengers and for everyone on the road,” said La Tara Harris, AT&T External Affairs. “A post, a selfie, a text, a scroll, an email while driving -- one look is all it takes. We’re glad to join forces with the team at MHSO to remind Maryland drivers – especially younger ones - it all can wait.”

“Driver distraction has been proven to be a significant cause of traffic crashes, many resulting in serious injury or death. We are teaming up with AT&T to raise awareness about the importance of driving distraction-free,” said Tom Gianni, Chief of the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office. “Our ultimate goal is zero traffic deaths and every time you drive distracted, you put people’s lives in danger. We are asking that everyone make the commitment to driving free of distraction because lives are on the line.”
