Canoeist Hospitalized In Critical Condition: Howard County Police

BREAKING: After authorities were called to a possible drowning in Ellicott City, police said a man was in critical condition.

ELLICOTT CITY, MD — An Ellicott City man is in critical condition Monday after his canoe tipped over in a pond in Howard County, police said.

At 5 a.m., officers said they were dispatched to a potential drowning in a pond behind Tangle Wood Court in Ellicott City.

Nicholas Bartko, 20, was on the side of the pond, where authorities believe a friend pulled him from the water prior to the arrival of first responders.

According to officials, Bartko was in a canoe with a friend when the boat tipped over in the pond. (Get news alerts from Ellicott City Patch.)
