Capsized Canoe At Centennial Lake Prompts Emergency Call: HCDFRS
A call about a boater drew the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services to Centennial Lake.

ELLICOTT CITY, MD — Officials said that an overturned canoe drew first responders to Centennial Lake Monday, July 1.
"Luckily, the person was wearing proper safety gear and a life jacket, and was safely brought to shore," officials said Monday afternoon.
While this canoeist ended up being equipped, the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services pointed to safety tips from the nonprofit Safe Kids Worldwide, which works to prevent unintentional injuries around the globe.

To improve boating safety, the organization recommends wearing a life jacket approved by the U.S. Coast Guard when on a boat, and ensure it fits snugly. To do this, the organization advises putting hands up in a "touchdown" position and ensuring the jacket cannot go over a child's chin or ears.
