Police ID Passenger Killed In Route 32 Crash

WEST FRIENDSHIP, MD — One person died and another was injured in a crash that closed MD 32 in Howard County for several hours Tuesday afternoon. The collision occurred near Interstate 70.

The two-vehicle crash was reported at 12:37 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, officials said.

Police said a Mercedes C300 was headed south on Route 32 when it made a left turn toward the I-70 east ramp and was hit by a truck.

Yan Ma, 41, of Millersville, who had been riding in the Mercedes, was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to police. Her name was released Thursday; police said next-of-kin notification was delayed since her relatives live out of the country.

The car's driver — Bohan Li, 31, of Pasadena — was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, and police reported Wednesday she had been released.

The driver of the truck — John Edward Turner, 46, of Marriottsville — was not seriously injured, police reported.

Based on the preliminary investigation, police said the Mercedes had a flashing red arrow and failed to yield right-of-way when it crossed Route 32.

It was hit by a Ford F-250 that was traveling north on Route 32, officials said.

All were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, according to officials.

The crash remains under investigation.

Route 32 north was closed at I-70 for hours, during which time drivers exiting east on I-70 had to go south on Route 32.

After 5 p.m., the Maryland State Highway Administration reported that all lanes had reopened.

INITIAL REPORT — Police said that a fatal crash has shut down a section of MD 32 Tuesday afternoon in Howard County. Route 32 was closed to northbound traffic in the area of Interstate 70, officials said.

The two-vehicle crash was reported before 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, according to state transportation officials.

After 2:20 p.m., Route 32 north remained closed at I-70; and on southbound Route 32, the left turn lane and left shoulder were also closed.

"Please avoid the area if possible," the Howard County Police Department advised.
