Fire Causes $1.5M In Damage To Laurel Apartment, 26 People Displaced, 5 Pets Rescued

A raging fire caused an estimated $1.5M damage to a Laurel apartment that displaced 26 residents. Five pets were rescued by firefighters.

LAUREL, MD — Firefighters were called to an apartment building in the 9000 block of Stebbing Way in Laurel around 11 a.m. Wednesday. Twenty-six residents were displaced and five pets were rescued from the roaring blaze. The initial damage estimate hovers around $1.5 million.

When they arrived, crews found heavy fire on all three floors of the building. The building had already partially collapsed before they arrived.

Crews worked to control the fire and searched the apartments for anyone inside. The primary search of the structure was clear of any occupants. Two dogs, two cats and a turtle were rescued from inside the building, according to the fire department.

The fire was placed under control after 55 minutes. Fire alarms were activated and residents had evacuated prior to the fire department showing up on the scene. There were no fire department or civilian injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal.
