HoCo Officers Killed Man in Ellicott City: Police

It was the second suicidal person killed by Howard County police this week, officials said.

A 61-year-old man in Ellicott City was killed Saturday morning after he threatened to hurt others in his home and refused to drop his weapon, according to a statement from the Howard County Police Department.

After 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, a man called 911 two times and said that a person armed with a knife was at a home in the 5000 block of Montgomery Road, planning to kill the occupants, police said.

When three officers arrived, they saw a man in the front yard armed with a knife, according to the report from police, which said the man ran inside the house after one officer used a Taser to subdue him.

“A few moments later, he came back outside and again confronted officers with the knife,” the report said. “The officers repeatedly ordered the man to drop the knife, but he continued toward them. Two officers fired their weapons, killing the suspect.”

One person in the residence was home at the time of the incident and was not harmed, the report said.

Police said that two knives were at the scene, and family members told police the man had been talking about suicide recently.

The officers involved will be on paid administrative leave during an internal investigation, police said.

This is the second suicidal person killed by Howard County police this week, according to a statement from police. Officials reported that there have been two other fatalities in police-involved shootings in Howard County in the past five years.
