Howard County General Hospital Changes Its Name To Reflect History, Look Toward Future
Howard County General Hospital leaders have unveiled a new name and logo as it becomes Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — On Monday, leaders announced that Howard County General Hospital's name has been changed to Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center.
“As we celebrate our 50th anniversary as a hospital and our 25th anniversary as a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, we look toward our future and continuing our commitment to be the community’s premier health care provider,” said Shafeeq Ahmed, M.D., president of Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center. “Being part of Johns Hopkins Medicine is who we are and who we have been. We are proud of our 25-year legacy and our new name reflects that ongoing connection.”
The name change follows the organization’s continuing integration and growth within Johns Hopkins Medicine that allows it to provide specialized health care services in multiple buildings across the center’s campus. With the change comes a Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center logo and rebranding.

“We are all aware and proud of the critical importance of community hospitals, and in particular the role Howard County General Hospital has played in serving the community for so many years,” said Kevin Sowers, president of the Johns Hopkins Health System and executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine. “Our evolution as a community hospital allows us the opportunity to deliver the best that Johns Hopkins Medicine has to offer. This name change underscores the connection that we have been building on for the last 25 years, and signifies our commitment to continuing to drive our mission forward together.”
Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center has 226 licensed beds in Columbia. As a comprehensive, acute-care medical center, it offers a full range of services, from neonatal care and oncology to outpatient treatment and critical care. The medical center boasts a professional staff of nearly 1,000 physicians and allied health professionals, representing 120 specialties and subspecialties, and a workforce of more than 1,800 employees.
