Matthew C. Winner Receives Bailer Award From McDaniel College

Matthew C. Winner of Ellicott City, Md., is the recipient of the 2016 Joseph R. Bailer Award from McDaniel College.

The prestigious award, named for one of the college’s most highly respected career educators, is presented each year to a McDaniel College master’s degree recipient who has made a significant contribution to the field of education.

Winner earned his master’s degree in school librarianship from McDaniel in 2009. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Towson University in 2005. A National Board Certified Teacher, he holds Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certifications in both teaching and school library media.

A library media specialist for Howard County Public Schools, Winner has most recently worked at Ducketts Lane Elementary School in Elkridge, Md., where he has been since the school opened in 2013. At Ducketts Lane, he also serves as an instructional team leader, where he delivers teacher in-services and teaches all students by integrating technology and information literacy skills. His instruction focuses on building global citizenship and connecting students with professionals and authors from around the globe using Skype and Google Hangouts. His students participate in global celebrations, such as International Dot Day, World Read Aloud Day and Poem in Your Pocket Day.

Known as a national leader in school librarianship, he was honored as a White House Champion of Change and was recognized among the Library Journal’s “Movers and Shakers: People Shaping the Future of Libraries” in 2013. In 2012, he was named the Maryland Society for Educational Technology (MSET) Outstanding Educator and was Howard County’s 2011 Outstanding Technology Using Educator. He has also received the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) SIGMS Technology Innovation Award.

In addition to being an active member of ISTE and MSET, he is a professional reviewer for School Library Journal and is involved with the American Library Association, Association of School Librarians and the Maryland Association of School Librarians (MASL). He served on the MASL Maryland Black-Eyed Susan (BES) award committees for both picture books and for grades 4–6, as well as helped establish the BES Graphic Novel Award in 2012.

As co-author of “Teach Math with the Wii,” he believes “that gaming and game-based learning are highly effective tools in engaging and supporting the academic success of our students.”

An active blogger, he maintains “The Busy Librarian” (http://www.busylibrarian.com) and “Let’s Get Busy” podcast (http://lgbpodcast.blogspot.com/), where he has interviewed more than 150 authors, illustrators and cartoonists. He is also the co-creator of the website “All the Wonders” (http://www.allthewonders.com), which he describes “a home for readers to discover new books and to experience the stories they love in wondrous ways. It is an entertainment channel, a variety show and a modern library all wrapped up into one digital home.”

In addition, he is represented by Red Fox Literary, a boutique agency specializing in children’s books.

The Joseph R. Bailer Award was established by the family of Dr. Bailer, who died in 1974. Bailer was chair of the Education Department at McDaniel College, then Western Maryland College and also Director of its graduate program from 1949-1971. He was a primary contributor to the growth of the program and influenced the lives of hundreds of graduate students, many of whom have gone on to leadership roles in educational programs both in Maryland and beyond. In the spirit of dedication and professionalism, the Bailer Award is given annually to a former graduate of the master’s program who has subsequently made a significant contribution to the field of education. The award rotates among many of the graduate programs of the college.
