Mt. Hebron Students Injured In School Bus Crash, Driver Cited: Police

Police said a school bus flipped due to speeding and was hit by another vehicle on Route 29, injuring five people.

ELLICOTT CITY, MD — Five people, including two Mt. Hebron students, were injured in a crash involving a school bus on Route 29 Monday morning, according to Howard County police. Officials said the driver was believed to have been at fault in the crash.

The driver of the school bus — Tyra India Wilcox, 50, of Halethorpe — was cited for negligent driving, police said. Authorities allege Wilcox was speeding at the time of the crash.

Before 7 a.m., Wilcox was taking the exit from Route 100 west to Route 29 north when she lost control of the school bus, which flipped onto its side, police reported.

A 2005 Toyota Matrix headed north on Route 29 hit the bus, officials said.

The driver of the Matrix — Brad Steven Krakower, 33, of Ellicott City — was taken to Howard County General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police reported.

Wilcox and school bus aide Jessica Blank, 44, of Columbia, were also taken to Howard County General with minor injuries, according to officials.

Two 15-year-old Mt. Hebron High School students on the bus were taken as a precaution with minor injuries to Johns Hopkins Hospital, authorities said.

The road reopened after approximately two hours; Route 29 had been closed to northbound traffic until approximately 9:15 a.m., authorities said.
