Most people prefer attractive appearances because many suffer from societal standards on beauty, which is also known as lookism. Surprisingly, beauty is considered a success key, and society is more welcoming to those who are aesthetically appealing. Even children who are unattractive are targeted as subjects of bullying.
It seems like lookism will be an ongoing social issue due to the many influences it has on an individual’s life. For instance, people claim that they have experienced discrimination based on their appearance rather than their capabilities. It is proven through studies that people who are more attractive get preferential treatment. The Guardian (2010) reported that attractive applicants are more likely to have higher paying jobs. This is why people, especially, diet harshly and undergo plastic surgery to meet society’s standards of beauty. Ultimately, people judge others and make assumptions based on physical appearances.
In addition, a survey found that women spend much money on trying to look good because they believe that their image plays a crucial role in their career path. Personally, I think that as long as the person is satisfied with the results, it is acceptable for him or her to take time in pursuing beauty. However, I have heard and seen many times that people become overly concerned and obsessive with their appearance, and they are still not satisfied. People are too attentive about others’ body image, but there is no need for a beauty competition. Eventually, this will grow into a bigger issue than it already is.

It is time to examine one’s inner beauty because beauty lies within and is beyond what others can physically see. People place too much time focusing on feeling and looking good. Some end up spending money that they cannot even afford; they live a life that is in disguise of who they really are. I really hope that people can take a step back and reflect on their internal self—the personality, actions, and thoughts. One can only get so far with external appearances; the internal beauty lasts longer and helps one to reach a more fulfilling life.
