Ellicott City Pedestrian Killed In Route 40 Crash: Police

Howard County police identified the pedestrian who died after Wednesday night's crash on US 40.

ELLICOTT CITY, MD (Updated at 6:30 a.m.) — A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car on US 40 in Ellicott City, police said Thursday morning.

Victor Manuel Fuentes Benitez, 37, of Ellicott City, was pronounced deceased at shock trauma overnight, according to officials.

At approximately 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday, police said a Fiat 500 headed west on US 40 near North Chatham Road hit Benitez.

According to investigators, Benitez was in the road and not in a crosswalk at the time of the crash.

After the crash, he was taken to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center with critical injuries, according to police, who reported Thursday morning that he had died.

Fiat driver Zachary S. Beck, 27, and passenger James S. Kim, 24, both of Woodstock, stayed at the scene and were uninjured, authorities reported.

After 11 p.m., police said US 40 west was closed between North Chatham Road and Plumtree Drive because of the collision. The investigation was ongoing.
