Police Shoot, Kill Suicidal Ellicott City Man
Howard County Police say a man who had hurt himself with a knife threatened two officers trying to help him, and shots were fired.

An Ellicott City man who had harmed himself with a knife was shot and killed by Howard County Police after he reportedly confronted the officers trying to help him.
Officers responded to a suicide-in-progress call about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 7600 block of Coachlight Lane in Ellicott City, according to a news release from the department. A man with a knife confronted two officers responding to the call. They were forced to fire their weapons, police say.
Police first talked with family members and then entered the residence. Inside, they encountered 45-year-old Darren Friedman in his bedroom with several serious self-inflicted stab wounds. As officers entered the room to help Friedman, he confronted them with the knife, according to police.

Friedman was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was pronounced deceased. The exact cause of death is undermined at this time. Police will await autopsy results.
