Rising Together in Maryland: 2026 Health for Humanity Yogathon (Surya Namaskar Yajna)

Communities Across Maryland Unite Through Yoga, Wellness, and Civic Engagement

A nationwide wave of wellness swept across the country this winter as participants from 36 states joined the 2026 Health for Humanity Yogathon, a 16-day public health awareness initiative centered on the ancient practice of Surya Namaskar, or Sun Salutation.

In Maryland alone, community members performed nearly 8,000 Surya Namaskars during the Surya Namaskar Yajna (SNY) period from January 1 through February 1, reflecting the state’s strong commitment to health, unity, and community engagement.

Launched nationally on January 14, 2026, the Yogathon introduced participants to a rejuvenating sequence of 10 simple yoga postures synchronized with mindful breathing. Designed to strengthen the body, improve flexibility, and calm the mind, Surya Namaskar became the foundation of a relay-style movement that blended virtual and in-person gatherings from the East Coast to the West Coast.

Temples, community centers, and marathon-style events further energized the initiative. At several locations, participants embraced both the physical challenge and spiritual depth of the practice by completing 108 Surya Namaskars each, symbolizing discipline, devotion, and resilience.

A special highlight on January 24 was Sevika Lehar—a unique nationwide relay where women (sevikas) across all U.S. time zones came together to collectively perform hundreds and even thousands of Surya Namaskars, fostering unity, strength, and sisterhood across the country.

Strong Community Engagement Across Maryland

The Maryland chapter of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA hosted a series of impactful local events under the Surya Namaskar Yajna banner.

Inaugural sessions held in Ellicott City, Cockeysville, and Frederick welcomed approximately 60 participants, including seven new members. The Frederick gathering was especially notable, as a representative from the Frederick County Executive Office attended to formally present a proclamation recognizing and supporting the initiative. Throughout the month, many community members also committed to performing daily Surya Namaskars at home, reinforcing the spirit of consistent self-discipline and wellness.

On February 1, 2026, more than 100 participants gathered for an 8-hour Surya Namaskar Yajna Yogathon across Maryland, completing over 3,000 Surya Namaskars collectively in a single day. Youth participation was particularly inspiring, with some children completing up to 108 repetitions. Organizers credited parents for nurturing perseverance, confidence, and healthy habits in the next generation.

Official proclamations honoring SNY 2026 were issued by the Governor of Maryland and the County Executives of Frederick, Montgomery, Howard, and Baltimore Counties, underscoring broad civic support for community-driven health initiatives.

A Growing Tradition of Service and Wellness

Since its inception in 2007, the Health for Humanity Yogathon has served as a flagship annual event for HSS, promoting yoga as a pathway to holistic well-being and civic responsibility. Over the years, elected officials across the country—including U.S. senators, governors, state representatives, and mayors—have endorsed the initiative through official proclamations.

Organizers emphasize that the Yogathon is more than a fitness challenge; it is a call to cultivate physical vitality, mental clarity, and meaningful community connection. The initiative reflects the timeless ideal of “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah” — May all be happy — encouraging individuals to take responsibility for their own well-being while uplifting those around them.

As the 2026 Yogathon concludes, Maryland organizers invite residents to continue their wellness journey through free weekly shakhas and ongoing yoga practice. Their message remains simple yet powerful: health is the real wealth we carry every day, and even 10 minutes of daily Surya Namaskar can be a transformative step toward lasting balance, resilience, and hope.
