Youth Empowerment Summit Focuses on Characteristics of Leadership
Howard County hIgh school representatives share their experiences with middle schoolers

The Youth Empowerment Summit (Y.E.S.), convened recently by the Howard County Public School System, focused on leadership. Howard County middle school students attending the summit were led through exercises prepared by Cathy Smith, coordinator for the Horizon Community Councils. Presenters included Nikhil Mehta, a senior at Marriotts Ridge High School, and Jasmine Daniel and Cole Innarino, juniors at Glenelg High School.
The younger students were asked to identify and discuss qualities of leadership and provide examples of people who embodied these qualities, ranking the leadership characteristics in order of importance. Among the qualities discussed were courage, confidence, integrity, flexibility, humility, commitment, empathy and the ability to inspire and to delegate.
The three student presenters are members of the Western Horizon Council, an advisory group comprised of community leaders, including middle and high school students, who live and/or work in the geographic area they represent. There are three other Community Councils – Ellicott City, Elkridge and Southeast.
