Baby Girl Dead, Dozens Displaced In Separate Baltimore County Fires

The fires were reported less than an hour apart at locations in Essex and Dundalk, officials said.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD โ€” An infant was fatally injured in a house fire in Essex on Friday night, and dozens of others were displaced after a separate blaze broke out at a Dundalk senior living facility.

The first fire was reported shortly before 7 p.m. at a home in the 1000 block of Foxcroft Lane in Essex. According to Baltimore County fire officials, crews arrived to find fire coming from the first and second floors and spreading to an adjoining home.

Firefighters entered the home and located the child's body. Authorities identified her as 6-month-old Sophia Rivera-Cortes.

An adult female and two children were able to escape the fire and were taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Around 45 minutes later, fire crews were dispatched to a second blaze at a high-rise apartment building located in the 100 block of Center Place in Dundalk. When crews arrived, they located the fire on the third floor of the building.

One person was evaluated, and crews were able to bring the fire under control.

Later on Friday, officials said multiple residents were evacuated from the apartment building due to the fire and that one person had been taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
